Game Overview

People Playground is a physics-based chaotic sandbox game that puts in your hands a god-like toolset allowing you to create, destroy, experiment, and cause havoc with a collection of faceless, stick-figure-like humanoids. The gameplay is pure, unadulterated emergent entertainment since there are no objectives, no scores, and no mistakes. You only have the infinite potentialities of a fully simulated physics world and your own dark creativity. Initially, you get an empty, white room and a small arsenal of things through a simple, searchable menu: weapons (guns, swords, explosives), tools (ropes, thrusters, electrical wires), and environmental objects (walls, doors, vehicles). The fundamental loop is a merry cycle of trying out things, noticing, and making changes. You create a Person (the game calls its test subjects), then go ahead to perform operations on them with your tools. The game’s hallmark “Realism” is, at the same time, its most potent feature and its biggest source of humor.

The simulation of the physical properties is so precise. The body of a person is split into simulated bones, muscles, and organs. If you fire at their leg, they will limp. If you shoot the arm, they will drop the weapon. If a person is hit by a car, their bones will break, and the person will be flung into a ragdoll. The electric system works at a high level of complexity; you can shape circuits, connect batteries to lights or motors, and even use electricity to harm your subjects. It is possible to create very complex machines of pain: a person on a conveyor belt is carried to a pit with spikes, then a flamethrower working on a timer burns the victim, and finally, a fan blows the ashes into a bucket. You can resort to the”Weld” tool to join different objects forever, making custom vehicles, complicated traps, or even strange, multi-limbed creatures.

The game’s community creates and shares “Contraptions” (pre-built scenes), which you can download and then modify, adding to the endless possibilities.
