Game Overview

Phasmophobia is a cooperative, psychological horror game that throws you and up to three friends into being ghost hunters, with just an assortment of investigative tools, your smarts, and heaps of fear. The gameplay is a nerve-racking, immersive simulation of paranormal investigation where teamwork is the key to figuring out the haunting ghost, collecting evidence, and staying alive. Your choices of locations for each ghost-hunting mission are varied: a family home, an old prison, or a campsite. After you pick a place, you pack your van with various types of equipment such as EMF readers for detecting electromagnetic fields, UV flashlights for finding fingerprints, spirit boxes for communicating with the dead, and crucifixes for warding off ghost attacks.

The main repeating actions are: exploring the place, gathering pieces of evidence, and making a run for the exit. When you step inside the haunted place, the spooky feeling hits you. The lights flicker, the doors groan, and maybe a child’s toy will suddenly start rolling on the floor. You should keep in touch and work together, but you can divide the space and go for a wider coverage. Still be near enough to help if a ghost suddenly appears or attacks.

Phasmophobia is well known for its intelligent “Ghost Behavior” system. Each ghost type (Spirit, Wraith, Poltergeist, etc.) exhibits a set of unique and sometimes very subtle behaviors that players must learn and recognize. For example, a ghost that often throws objects is likely to be a Poltergeist; a ghost that appears as a shadowy figure on camera is probably a Shade; a ghost that hunts more aggressively when you are alone is most likely a Banshee. Evidence gathering is just a part of the work; you are essentially interacting with a ‘living’ (or undead) entity. Phasmophobia’s voice recognition feature is very impressive.
