Game Overview

DrainSim changes the tedious, messy task of municipal drainage maintenance into an unexpectedly thought-provoking and highly technical simulation of urban infrastructure management. The gameplay is detailed, and you get to play the first-person role of the participant, mapping out the massive underground maze of pipes, culverts, and treatment facilities in a dynamic city. Your equipment consists of a high-pressure water jetter, a set of inspection cameras, and a simple truck. You will be responding to service calls from a clogged sink in a house to a city sewer blockage that is threatening to flood a residential street.

The basic gameplay consists of diagnosis, intervention, and restoration; for inspection, you lower the cameras through the maintenance holes, and from that visual inspection, you are able to identify anything from simple grease buildup to very large “fatbergs” and other puzzle-like obstructions that require analysis. Pressure Management is the game’s signature feature that requires accuracy; if the pressure is too low, then the clog will never be cleared, but on the other hand, if the jetter is forced to maximum, then there is a risk of bursting the old, corroded pipes. This will initiate a situation where you will have to find the rupture, repair the pipes, and prevent the sewage from flowing into people’s basements.
