Game Overview

Better Than Dead lets players awaken as a robo-scavenger living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where challenges like permadeath, procedural generation, and scrap-based crafting come together in a punishing survival roguelike. The main play revolves around “scavenging cycles”; you have to go to procedurally generated ruins, abandoned bunkers, and irradiated forests to gather scrap metal, circuitry, and fuel cells, each having weight and volume that influence movement speed and stealth noise. On the one hand, your “energy core” is not only your health but also your stamina; things like sprinting or firing your makeshift rivet gun will make this resource go down, and if you run out of it, you will have just undergone an emergency shutdown, which means permanent death.

With melee (pipe-wrenches, electrified batons) and ranged (scrap-rifles, jury-rigged flamethrowers) weapons at your disposal, combat turns out to be very engaging, which, however, will cause each weapon to degrade over time and require field-repairs using scavenged parts.
