Game Overview
Call of Duty: World at War throws players right in the thick of the most brutal and bloody final years of the Second World War. It removes all the glamour of modern warfare to present the most raw and graphic portrayal of this war so far in the series. The gameplay, which constantly bombards your senses, follows the story of US Marine Private Miller and the harrowing experiences in the Pacific Theater and Soviet soldier Private Petrenko, who fights, almost to the death, in Berlin.A major characteristic of the game is its raw and unfiltered depiction of violence; the enemy you fight is not only frighteningly clever, but you will also see Japanese soldiers playing dead, throwing banzai charges, using interconnected tunnel systems, and Germans fighting with utter desperation to the death in the ruins of their capital. You get to control a T-34 tank leading a fierce battle on the streets of Stalingrad.
The first-ever multiplayer mode, "Nazi Zombies," is introduced, initially unexpected but later becoming a very popular part of the franchise. Fighting gets really intense when flamethrowers are used to clear out bunkers with super efficiency, and also when explosives are thrown around, causing huge damage and making even a desperate firefight turn in one's favour. The narrative is framed through authentic wartime footage and gritty, desaturated visuals, creating an immersive sense of period authenticity. This uncompromising return to the series' roots delivered a raw, terrifying, and unforgettable experience that reminded players of the true cost of war.
