Far Cry 3 Deluxe Edition is an open-world, first-person action-adventure game in which the player finds themselves on the tropical, lawless Rook Islands as Jason Brody, a wealthy tourist who has to transform into a tough survivor if he is to rescue his friends who have been kidnapped by the insane pirate lord Vaas Montenegro. The main way the game unfolds is through acts of liberation and exploration: the player takes control of enemy outposts to weaken Vaas's hold on the area, which in turn enables the acquisition of fast-travel points, new weapons, and side missions while at the same time decreasing the number of enemy patrols in that region.

The island acts as a living sandbox containing hostile wildlife such as sharks, tigers, and komodo dragons, which players can hunt to obtain upgrades—specifically, the skins of the animals are used to increase the number of inventory slots, expand the capacity of ammo pouches, and boost the wallet's capacity, thus establishing a clear risk-reward situation in which each hunt involves danger. The skill tree offers three paths (the Spider for stealth, the Heron for ranged combat, and the Shark for brute-force assault), letting players adapt Jason's abilities to their preferred playstyle as they gain XP from kills, challenges, and missions.

In Far Cry 3, player choice is a key feature, combining tactical stealth with full-scale violent combat. Whether players want to deal with a situation by carrying out a silent knife attack, use a bow to get rid of enemies from a distance without making a sound, or instead cause destruction with assault rifles, grenades and a flamethrower—each of these methods can be used depending on the environment and the make-up of the enemies—the game's dynamic open world promotes spontaneous gameplay; for example, setting a patch of grass on fire will produce a smokescreen, letting a caged tiger loose in an enemy camp leads to chaos, and blowing up a fuel depot can set off a chain reaction that clears an entire building.

The Deluxe Edition includes the "Monkey Business" and "Lost Expeditions" bonus missions, plus special weapons such as the signature M-700 sniper rifle and a silenced 1911 pistol, along with the "Predator" bow pack, which gives early access to powerful hunting equipment. The enemy A.I. responds realistically by flanking you, calling in reinforcements, and using grenades to drive you out, forcing you to reposition and make tactical adjustments constantly.
