Game Overview
Red Dead Redemption 1 centers on bringing to life the character of John Marston, a reformed outlaw, in a setting of the Old West that is perishing. Elements such as moral dilemmas, interactive wildlife, and slow-paced gunfights are merged to create an atmospheric open-world experience. The main gameplay loop is built around the "bounty and betrayal" cycle. You operate in three very different locations (the windy plains of New Austin, the dusty Mexican desert of Nuevo Paraíso, and the industrially developed West Elizabeth), and you get clues for your target like broken twigs, bullet shells, or scared animals.
Besides all this, you are also keeping an eye on your Honor meter, which changes NPC speech, store prices, and even the reactions to looting the dead. The combat depends on using a "Dead Eye" targeting method, a sort of time dilation during which, for example, you mark several enemies or vital spots (gun hand, knee, hat brim for intimidation), with further upgrade possibilities for organ-specific shots that activate unique death moves or surrender gestures.

The frontier keeps running via a "dynamic frontier simulation": stagecoaches follow their scheduled routes, predators behave according to their hydration cycles, gang hideouts will be refilled if you don't burn their supply wagons, and random events (snake bite victims, hanging rescues, dueling challenges) are procedurally generated based on time of day and your notoriety radius.
Important for unlocking new content is the "outfit and ambient challenge" system, do a certain task (herb picking in Tall Trees, cougar hunting with a knife, five-finger fillet games won in Armadillo) to get clothes that also increase stats like the Bureau Uniform (decreases law aggression) or the Poncho (lowers desert heat fatigue).
